The pillars of direct marketing as we know them:
- List – build, groom, and protect your list! Before the internet you would have rented a list of names and addresses from a list broker and spent thousands on postage and direct mail pieces to reach these people. On the internet, it works a little different. Now renting or buying a list of email addresses and emailing them unsolicited is a BIG no-no. Instead we ask potential customers to join our list voluntarily in exchange for something of value. It’s called “opt-in”.
- Copywriting – your direct marketing effort succeeds or fails on the words. We look for words that work, we’re not at all original. Learn constantly from successful copy and adapt it to selling your product or service. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t subscribe to the cut-paste-smooth philosophy touted all over the web these days. Instead, study, think, and learn.
- Testing – successful direct marketers in the century leading up to the internet tested continually, as a matter of course. Testing is just as important on the internet, only now it happens much faster. We’re talking days, not weeks or months.
